Mitsubishi
Heavy Industries Ltd., Nagasaki, Japan,. 1967, 12,299gt, 564 feet. 21 knots.
The main engine was a Sulzer 9RD90, SA two stroke diesel of 21000 SHP. The
second of the pair of Japanese-built PRIAMS. Transferred to Blue Funnel in
1972 as PHRONTIS. She lasted with the Ocean Group until 1982. Subsequent names
were GULF OSPREY and in 1983 IRAN EJTEHAD. In April 1995 she arrived at Gadani
Beach under the name DOLPHIN V111 - the last of the PRIAMS to be broken up.
I sailed on voyage 11 to Japan having been on board for the coasting before - June to October 1970. We sailed from London to Hamburg then on to Singapore, Hong Kong (where the deck cargo of an Alsatian dog was discharged) and Japan. Main engine was a Sulzer 9RD90. No problems all trip bar a burst fuel pipe. I was 21 that trip so celebrated in HK. Whilst in Japan we were able to visit Expo 70 at Osaka. The Chief Engineer was Mike Fowler who had been in Japan for the building as resident 2nd Engineer . Jimmy Stewart from the Dundee area was the 2nd for this trip and together with Jeff the 3rd we painted the Far East a very beer colour! A great trip. One highlight was we picked up a wire round the tail shaft seal rope guard. The seal was badly damaged and we went straight into dry dock on arrival at Hamberg. There was no damage although we had been sailing at 21 knots with no oil in the sterntube! Back to London and them home.
